چکیده

SIR,-I wish to draw attention to a minor inaccuracy in the valuable study on normal haemnatological values by Drs. Barbara J. Bain and J. M. Englad (8 February, p. 306). The significantly lower neutrophil counts in women than in men found by Allen and Alexander' were confined to the postmenopausal age groups and were not a feature of the whole age range 18-65. In fact, in a larger series of blood donors (408 male, 789 female) Cruickshank' and Cruickshank and Alexander3 found hIigher mean neutrophil counts in premenopausal women (age groups 18-23 to 36-41) than in men, though 'the differences failed to reach statistical significance. The influence of the menopause on the neutrophil count of women has to be borne in mind when interpreting individual values.-I am, etc.,

Normal haematological values: sex difference in neutrophil count.

Blood counts were performed on 100 male and 100 female staff to establish normal ranges for our hospital. Neutrophil counts were found to be on average 0.66 times 10-9/1 (660/mm-3) higher in women than in men. Statistically this difference was highly significant and was not due to the fact that many of the women were taking oral contraceptives. The neutrophil counts of the men and women were al...

In contrast, automated counting ...

AIM/BACKGROUND Previous studies have suggested that healthy subjects of African ancestry have lower total white cell counts, neutrophil counts and platelet counts than Caucasian subjects and that, at least among Caucasians, women have higher neutrophil and platelet counts than men. The primary aim of this study was to confirm and quantify the ethnic differences, confirm the sex difference in Ca...

A sex difference in the leucocyte count.

In a study of a group of 325 blood donors between the ages of 18 and 65 years, the total leucocyte and polymorph counts of the females aged 50 to 65 years were found to be significantly lower than those of the corresponding group of male donors. In the whole series of female donors, there were significantly lower total leucocyte and lymphocyte counts with increasing age and a less significant (...
